CHAPTER HISTORY
ELKINS PURPLE MAJESTIES
Four Silly Hats and a Bunch of YaYas

The origins of the ELKINS PURPLE MAJESTIES chapter of the Red Hat Society can be traced to four close friends who call themselves the YaYas: Judy Jack, Sharon McQuain, Gerri Rosencrance and Charlotte Thomas.

When Judy was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002 her fellow YaYas knew they had to do something to keep her spirits up as she underwent treatment and chemotherapy. To do this, the YaYas kicked up their heels and had a little frivolous fun at frequent lunches and dinners together.

At on of these luncheons, Judy's sister-in-law, Sharon, decided to surprise the gang and add a little extra spice to the festivities. She brought along four inexpensive hats she had bought at a flea market and decorated with silly flowers. The hats were an immediate hit!

Judy later recalled the story to her friend Lyla Howell. Lyla remarked that it sounded similar to a group she had read about online called the RED HAT SOCIETY. Both women wondered if a local chapter could be formed. Lyla set the wheels in motion -- researching the Red Hat Society, calling friends, and selecting a place for the first gathering. In June 2003 the big day arrived and was quite a success!

At the July 2003 meeting we voted upon chapter names. Becky Mandolidis suggested ELKINS PURPLE MAJESTIES. The name was an immediate hit and we quickly took off -- becoming an official Red Hat chapter.

Members of the ELKINS PURPLE MAJESTIES come from all walks of life. We have both red and pink hatters and traditionally get together once a month.

The rest is a fun history of laughter and friendship ...

QUEEN MOTHER
The Queen Mother is in charge of the overall 'disorganization' of the chapter and is the contact between the chapter and the Official Red Hat Society. The EPM crown periodically passes from lady to lady because, quite frankly, we like a little mixed up monarchy. This keeps everyone involved and short reigns make the weight of the crown fun to bear.

VICE QUEEN
The Vice Queen is the honorary right-hand woman to the Queen Mother. She often is the one to read the poem "Warning" at chapter events. Everyone needs a cheering section and the Vice Queen is our perky burst of pep. She is the sympathetic ear behind the throne and reminds everyone that "Red Hatters Matter".

DUCHESS OF THE MONTH
Even a 'disorganization' needs a little organization if they are to meet periodically. Each Duchess works with the Queen Mother to plan and select one chapter event for a particular month. This stirs interests -- and ideas -- among chapter members. If the Queen Mother wears the crown then the Duchess wears an honorary tiara - until it's passed for the next month of fun!

PINK HATTERS
Flush with youthful indiscretion, pink hatters are those ladies under 50 who know just how fun a "no rules" Red Hat world can be. These ladies can spit with the best of them.

REDMASTER
Instead of a webmaster for our site, we have a REDMASTER, in honor of our crimson color. This individual works behind the scenes creating the Elkins Purple Majesties website you are visiting and moderates the EPM chapter newsletter.

The REDMASTER owns and operates several other websites and newsletters. She has a background in auctioneering, advertising graphic design, concert promotion, and public relations. She has a variety of interests, most notably in television, film, and entertainment. Her biggest claims to 15 minutes of fame include being honored as one of TV Guide's #1 Fans a few years back (her clip made the national TV show), serving as an extra in the Warner Brothers film "We Are Marshall" starring Matthew McConaughey and Matthew Fox, and serving as a crew member on the independent film "B.A.S.I.C. Decisions". Both films were shot in West Virginia.

If you would like help creating your own website the REDMASTER would be happy to talk with you.

This is "PUP". She is the official mascot of the Elkins Purple Majesties. She has her own red hat and purple boa (although technically she is a pink hatter and the hat and boa are on loan from the goose in the front yard.) She wears her purple collar with pride and no fuss. She is a 19 lb. mixed breed wonder and a big hit at parades.

At home PUP has two older brothers, MARTIN and WIZZER. All 3 are from the same litter and our RedMaster was mid-wife at their births in January 2004. Wiz is Pup's identical twin. Martin looks completely different. Pup is very quiet and very affectionate. Wiz, on the other hand, is speed and jealousy defined while Martin is a very laid back, roly-poly puppy. Joining the pack is big brother Buddy, a sheltie/shepherd/retriever mix, who keeps everyone in line with his perfect gentle demeanor and temperament.

Pup would love nothing more than to lay beside you in the recliner every evening. She also likes to get her belly rubbed (they all like that!) Wizzer will go into a trance if you rub his neck, Martin thinks the world revolves around food, and Buddy absolutely LOVES the outdoors and is a friend to everyone he meets. In fact, Buddy is a semi-permanent student at D&E College where the little ones sometimes follow. If you see them out and about make them sit, shake hands, and then call Barbara or Sharon to come get them!

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Where is the Elkins Purple Majesties chapter of The Red Hat Society located?

A: Our home base is Elkins, Randolph County, West Virginia. We are nestled in the Potomac Highlands and heart of "The Mountain State" Appalachian mountains. Elkins, a small town of approximately 8,000, is home to picturesque Davis & Elkins College and serves as the headquarters for the Monongahela National Forest.

Often considered the "Playground of the East," Elkins is centrally located near Pittsburgh PA, Washington DC, Roanoke VA, and Columbus OH. Steeped in tradition and a rich history, the area offers an unlimited variety of things to do and see year-round. Biking, caving, skiing, fishing, hunting, and golfing are just a few past times. There are Civil War battlefields, antique shops, quaint bed and breakfasts, historic landmarks, railroad and train excursions. Elkins hosts the Mountain State Forest Festival, Augusta Heritage Festival, and International Ramp CookOff. A variety of other fairs and festivals are held throughout the year.

Of course, you might want to simply sit for a spell and chat with the warm country folk. From the front porch you can sip lemonade in the summertime, marvel at the bright, colorful fall foliage, or catch the beauty of a mountain snowfall. In the spring, when you hear the peep frogs for the first time, you will have no doubt why they call it WILD WONDERFUL WEST VIRGINIA!
